Not individualized advice

Information on this website is provided for general informational purposes only and does not constitute individualized investment, legal, or tax advice. Investment advice is provided only to clients under a written advisory agreement.

Investment risk

All investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal. Material risks associated with the firm’s investment approach include, without limitation:

  • Concentration risk. Because the strategy favors a limited number of positions, and does not impose a fixed maximum position size, a client’s portfolio may be more volatile and more exposed to the performance of individual issuers than a broadly diversified portfolio.
  • Market risk. The value of securities may decline due to general market, economic, or political conditions unrelated to the specific merits of a given company.
  • Thematic and sector risk. Portfolios oriented around specific structural themes may be more exposed to developments affecting those sectors or themes than a broadly diversified portfolio.
  • Geopolitical and policy risk. Changes in government policy, trade relationships, or geopolitical conditions can materially affect the companies and themes the firm evaluates.
  • Liquidity risk. Some securities held in client portfolios may have lower trading volumes, which can affect the ability to buy or sell such securities at a desired price and time.
  • Execution timing risk. Because accounts are managed on a non-discretionary basis, a delay between a recommendation and a client’s approval of a transaction may result in the transaction executing at a different price than originally contemplated.
  • Valuation risk. Securities purchased because they appear undervalued relative to their underlying earning power may remain undervalued for extended periods, or may decline further, before, or without, the market recognizing their intrinsic value.
  • Pooled-investment-vehicle risk. Mutual funds and exchange-traded funds are subject to the risks of their underlying investments, and may involve management fees and expenses, tracking error, and other fund-specific costs.
  • Options risk. Options involve a high degree of risk and are not suitable for every client. An option may expire worthless, and certain strategies can produce losses greater than the premium received.
  • Client-directed transaction risk. A transaction independently directed by a client may be inconsistent with the firm’s advice, and the firm cannot assure the suitability, execution, or performance of a transaction it did not recommend.
