Top-down research

Seven forces we study.

  1. Macroeconomic conditions

Monetary policy, interest rates, inflation, and economic cycles shape asset valuations and market behavior.

  2. Investor psychology and economic behavior

Behavioral biases, sentiment, and crowd psychology drive mispricing, which disciplined, independent analysis can exploit.

  3. Global capital flows

The direction of capital flows signals where value is being created and where it is at risk.

  4. Geopolitical developments

Shifts in alliances, trade, and security influence supply chains and access to markets.

  5. Technological innovation

New technologies redefine cost structures, competitive advantage, and which businesses endure.

  6. Demographic shifts

Changes in population, age, and household formation reshape demand across decades.

  7. Government policy

Regulation, taxation, and public investment alter the terrain on which businesses compete.

Bottom-up research

Seven situations we watch for.

We evaluate each business on competitive position, financial condition, management quality, and valuation, looking for a discount to underlying earning power and a clear catalyst to close it.

A change in leadership

A new CEO or chairman already executing a plan the market has not priced in.

Mispriced complexity

A business quietly upgraded into something higher margin and higher quality, still priced for what it was.

A structural pivot

A shift in end markets or product mix the market has not yet priced into earnings.

An operational turnaround

Cost cuts, restructuring, or a new strategy already producing results the stock does not yet reflect.

A scarce, underappreciated asset

An asset a competitor could not reasonably rebuild, at any price.

A position underwritten by policy

Government investment or contracts directly funding the outcome, not just a policy tailwind.

A macro or policy inflection

A shift in policy or the economic cycle that revalues an entire asset class, not one company.
